If you want your preschool to attract more families and better support children’s development, your classroom should not simply be filled with furniture and materials. You should divide the space into clear learning centers based on children’s ages, activity needs, and educational goals. After that, you can choose the right furniture and materials for each area.

To help you decide which learning centers are suitable for your classroom and make your setup process easier, I will walk you through how to set up learning centers below, along with what each area is used for and what you should consider when planning the layout.

What Are Learning Centers in Preschool?

You may think of a learning center as only an area used to teach academic courses. But preschool learning centers are much broader. They are clearly defined spaces where children can build, create, role-play, explore independently or in small groups.

When you set up a learning center, you need to give each area a clear purpose and provide enough space and suitable materials. The focus is on hands-on, child-led activities instead of formal lessons. Children still develop early literacy, math, language, social, and problem-solving skills, but they do so naturally through play and exploration.

How to Set up Learning Centers in Your Classroom?

There’s no need to feel anxious. The following steps will help you create learning centers that are practical, safe, and easy to manage.

Measure your Classroom

First, you need to measure the entire classroom and draw a simple floor plan. You need to mark the locations of doors, windows, sinks, load-bearing walls, power outlets, and emergency exits, and indicate which spaces are available. This will prevent your chosen furniture from blocking doors, windows, or emergency exits.

Choose the Learning Centers You Need

When choosing learning centers, you need to consider the following factors:

Children’s Age

Class Size

Teaching objectives

Room Size

Daily Schedule

Don’t add too many learning centers simply to make the classroom look complete! Most preschool classrooms begin with several core learning centers, such as:

Reading and Literacy

Blocks

Dramatic Play

Art

Math and Manipulatives

Sensory Play

So you can start with these basic core learning centers and add other areas as space allows. If you choose flexible furniture and materials, some compatible areas can share the same space, such as reading and relaxation, or science and sensory areas.

Transform Your Classroom with Custom Furniture Solutions

     Try it for Free!

Allocate Space to Each Learning Center

You need to estimate how many children will use each learning center at one time and then allocate enough space for the center so that children can move freely. Inadequate space can easily lead to conflicts due to overcrowding. This is why I remind you not to sacrifice the capacity to increase the number of learning centers. Understanding the capacity of each activity area will also help you choose the appropriate number of tables, chairs, bookshelves, and activity materials later on.

When planning the location of each learning center, you also need to consider the noise level of the activities. Keep quiet and active areas separate, and place areas prone to getting dirty near a sink for timely cleaning.

Plan Traffic Flow While Positioning Each Center

While choosing the location of each learning area, you should also plan the children’s movement routes. First, mark the main paths between the entrance, restrooms, sinks, storage areas, and emergency exits. Then, arrange the learning areas around these paths, ensuring that children can reach each area without having to cross other groups’ activity areas.

Avoid creating excessively long, open paths to prevent children from running; ensure that the entrance to each activity center is wide enough for children to enter and exit easily. Keep floor play areas, especially block areas, away from main passageways. Separate quiet areas from active areas and keep them away from busy routes, while areas prone to getting messy should be located as close as possible to water sources for easy cleaning later.

Create Clear Boundaries

You need to define the boundaries of each activity area to help children understand the scope of their activities and prevent materials from mixing between different areas.

You can define an area with:

Low storage shelves

Rugs or floor mats

Child-sized tables

Soft seating

Open dividers

Different flooring or wall displays

Choose Furniture and Materials

You should choose sturdy, durable, and easy-to-clean furniture, not just focusing on appearance and price. The furniture height should be appropriate for the children in your classroom, allowing them easy access to materials independently. When purchasing toys and materials, consider the types of activities you plan to conduct and the number of children. Don’t overload the shelves at once; too many toys not only make the space less tidy but also distract children.

Check all furniture and materials for sharp edges or loose parts, and ensure they are easy to maintain or replace. It’s recommended to buy everything from the same supplier; this facilitates future updates and saves time and money (always check the supplier’s certifications to ensure child safety).

Establish a Clear Storage System

Material storage is often a major cause of clutter in classrooms. Therefore, I recommend establishing a storage system before placing teaching materials in the classroom. First, categorize materials and use the same categories throughout the school year. Choose a fixed storage location for each category, ideally near frequently used learning areas. Place regularly used materials on easily accessible shelves and store spare materials separately to avoid overcrowding. (The rules for the storage system must be communicated to all kindergarten staff, discussed and finalized, and children should be guided to understand them.)

For materials shared across multiple learning areas, I recommend using mobile storage units for easy movement without altering the overall system. Label all storage containers or their locations with pictures or simple text labels. Regularly check the usability of the storage system, remove damaged items, and return mismatched materials to their correct locations. Ensure that hazardous tools such as scissors and glue are stored out of children’s reach.

Test the Layout and every learning center

Once the furniture is in place, you should walk through the classroom as if you were following the daily routine. Check whether children can:

Enter and leave each center easily

Reach materials safely

Move chairs without blocking a walkway

Carry materials without crossing busy areas

Reach the sink, toilet, and exits without difficulty

Ask staff to test the layout as well. They may notice blocked views, crowded areas, or storage problems that are easy to miss.

What Are the Different Types of Learning Centers in Preschool Classrooms?

Learning Centers are typically broken down into interest centers (such as math or reading), exploration centers (such as science or sensory), and expression centers (such as dramatic play and art). You should start with the areas used most often, then add or rotate other centers when space allows. The following are some common learning centers and how to set them up.

Reading and Literacy Center

A reading corner provides a quiet space in your classroom where children can slow down, browse books, and enjoy stories. Reading requires a quieter environment, so choose a location that avoids active areas like drama play areas.

Use low shelves, rugs, or soft dividers to define the area; this creates a sense of a distinct space without obstructing your line of sight.

Add a soft rug, floor cushions, or a small sofa to make the area feel comfortable.

Use low bookshelves or display racks that showcase book covers facing outward, making it easy for children to browse and select books. (If space permits, I highly recommend reading trees.)

Keep the book selection simple and rotate books by theme, season, or classroom topic.

Art Center

An art center gives your children a dedicated place to draw, paint, make crafts, and develop creativity and fine motor skills. With a clear art area, you can also keep most art materials and mess inside one planned space, instead of letting them spread across the whole classroom.

If the classroom layout allows, you can set up the art corner near the sink, so cleaning hands, tools, and surfaces becomes easier.

Choose tables and chairs that can handle paint, glue, markers, and frequent wiping.

Use washable flooring, or add a protective floor mat if the original floor is not easy to clean.

Prepare open shelves for paper, crayons, markers, and basic art supplies, and use labels to keep materials grouped clearly.

Keep paint, glue, scissors, clay, and other messy or higher-risk materials in a teacher-managed storage area.

Prepare a drying rack, display board, or shelf for finished artwork.

Use trays or table mats during activities to protect the tabletop from scratches, paint, and glue, and to make cleanup easier for you.

You can also consider adding some artwork to the walls to inspire your child’s creativity.

Dramatic Play Center

In the dramatic play corner, children can improve their self-expression and deepen their understanding of different occupations and customs by acting out real-life situations.

Choose one clear theme at a time, such as a hospital, grocery store, kitchen, clinic, or post office.

Add child-sized furniture that fits the theme, such as a play kitchen, doll bed, checkout counter, or display shelf.

Leave enough open floor space for children to move, talk, and play together comfortably.

Use hooks, baskets, or low shelves to store costumes and props, and group items by theme to make cleanup easier.

You can also use the classroom itself as a role-play setting. From time to time, let children take on simple classroom jobs or switch roles with the teacher for a short activity. This gives them a better understanding of daily routines and what a teacher does throughout the day.

Blocks Center

A block center helps children develop spatial awareness, problem-solving skills, balance, and creativity through building, testing, dismantling, and rebuilding various structures. Playing with blocks can be noisy, so you should place it away from quiet corners.

Provide ample floor space, ideally large enough to accommodate at least 3-4 children.

You can use a large rug or mat to mark the building area. They also make classrooms easier to organize, help children use materials more independently, and allow teachers to supervise multiple activities simultaneously.

How many centers should a preschool classroom have?
There is no fixed number. Most classrooms can start with four to six core centers, then add or rotate other areas based on the room size, class size, children’s age, and daily schedule.

What are the objectives of a learning center?
The purpose of a learning center is to give children a clear place to take part in a certain type of activity. Each center should help children use materials independently, make choices, and work alone or with others. It should also be easy for your staff to supervise, organize, and reset.

What is another name for a learning center?
You may also see it called a learning area, activity center, interest area, or classroom center. These terms usually refer to the same idea: a defined part of the classroom used for a specific type of activity.

Can two learning centers share the same space?
Yes. You can let two compatible centers share the same area, especially when your classroom is small. For example, reading and calming activities can use one quiet corner, while the same table can be used for math in the morning and art later in the day.

How can I set up learning centers in a small classroom?
Start with the centers your children use most and avoid giving every activity a permanent area. Use low shelves, mobile storage, shared tables, and furniture that can serve several purposes. This allows you to change the use of a space without filling the classroom with too much furniture.

Plan a Complete Learning Center Layout with Xiha Kidz

Don’t be anxious; You do not have to create every center at once. Start with the areas that best suit your classroom, then add or rotate other centers as your needs change. With the right furniture and layout, one space can also support different activities.

If you need help planning your preschool classroom, Xiha Kidz can provide classroom layout support, furniture recommendations, and customized solutions based on your room dimensions, age group, and budget. A clear plan can help you avoid unsuitable purchases and create learning centers that remain practical as your program grows.

Learning centers are clearly defined classroom areas for specific types of play and hands-on learning.
